Microneedling: Treating large pores
Microneedling is one of the most popular and well-known skincare procedures due to it’s celebrity following. A fave amongst beauty guru’s and celebs alike, this treatment is a go-to for those looking to change their skin with very little downtime, but with major results.
This medical procedure involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny, sterile needles in order to induce the natural production of new collagen which causes plumping and thickening of the skin in response. It is designed to treat various skin concerns such as fine lines & wrinkles, acne scarring, sun damage, pigmentation, melasma, skin texture and tone, and large pores.
I’ve noticed lately the biggest skin concern for my patients is pore size. I constantly get asked what procedure will help to shrink the sizes of their pores. Despite what you may have heard, the answer is no— pores cannot “shrink”. We are born with our pore size, and that does not change. Pores around the more oily areas of the face such as the nose, chin and forehead can also appear larger than other areas which more commonly appear smaller and generally produce less oil.
Due to the natural aging process, over time our skin slowly loses collagen and begins to lax, thus creating the appearance of larger pores. This process can be accelerated by certain factors such as smoking, lack of sleep and excessive sun exposure.
However, with the proper use of medical-grade skincare products and clinical treatments such as Microneedling, we are able to firm up the skin around the pore by inducing a natural increase in collagen production, causing the pore to appear smaller.
Microneedling is a form of Collagen- Induction Therapy. By penetrating the tiny needles in targeted areas, this allows a controlled injury to the skin which causes a natural response by the body to heal and repair the affected areas. The skin does this by naturally flooding the skin with healing new collagen and elastin. Thus creating smoother, firmer, more radiant complexion! We are able to adjust the speed and depth of needle penetration in specific target areas, such as the enlarged pores, to treat them more aggressively and focus our attention to the desired area of concern. In this process, overtime the pores will tighten due to the skin around them, and they will appear less visible.
Another thing to consider is— do you do have large pores, or simply clogged pores a.k.a blackheads? When our pores fill up with dirt, oil, and debris like makeup, our pores are more visible. A deep cleansing and exfoliating treatment like our Hydrafacial Fusion, could also help extract debris from clogged pores and cause them to appear smaller.
Of course, to keep pore size reduced and tighter, its best to get regular sessions monthly to start, and gradually space them apart to 3-4 treatments a year. Consistency is key with this treatment to keep skin more supple and keep producing collagen, which we are unfortunately always losing with age.
